UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir

MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV

May 26, 2012

Heavyweight bout: Cain Velasquez (9-1) vs. Antonio Silva (16-3)

Official Decision: Cain Velasquez (10-1) def. Antonio Silva (16-4) via absolute destruction (TKO-punches) 3:36 of Round One.

Round One:

Velasquez is the former UFC heavyweight champion, coming off of his only loss, a knockout defeat to Junior dos Santos last November at the inaugural UFC on FOX show. BigFoot Silva is coming off of a loss against Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion and training partner of Velasquez, Daniel Cormier. Cormier is cornering Silva. Before that, he scored the biggest win of his MMA career against the legendary Fedor Emelianenko via TKO (doctor's stoppage). This is BigFoot's UFC debut.

Velasquez gets a superstar's reaction. I blinked and Velasquez takes Silva down after catching his kick. Velasquez trying to get some ground and pound going. Silva is a jiu-jitsu black belt. He throws some short elbows that cut up Silva. Crowd chants CAIN CAIN CAIN. Holy hell. The blood is spraying like a sprinkler. Holy crap. There is a huge pool of blood underneath him. Blood is in Silva's eyes, who clearly is having trouble seeing. Ref briefly stops the action to check to cut. Crowd boos, as Silva is totally covered in blood. The ref is asking if he can see. He says yes. Like he would actually say no?

They start back in the same position. More ground and pound by Vealsquez. Silva trying to sweep up. Velasquez is on top of Silva, who is bleeding like crazy. I don't like stoppages due to cuts, but if there was ever a case, this would be one of this. Velasquez has his back and is pounding on Silva. Silva now on his back. Big rights and lefts by Velasquez. Josh Rosenthal mercifully stops this fight. Looked like Silva took a couple shots too many as he turtled up. Velasquez DESTROYED HIM.

Official Decision: Cain Velasquez (10-1) def. Antonio Silva (16-4) via absolute destruction (TKO-punches) 3:36 of Round One.

Velasquez says he's glad he has Daniel Cormier as his training partner to help him with this fight. He puts over his coaches and says this is the step in the right direction. You damn right it is.
