UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV
May 26, 2012
UFC Heavyweight Championship: Junior dos Santos (14-1) vs. Frank Mir (16-5)
This is dos Santo's first title defense since knocking out Cain Velasquez last fall at the inaugural UFC on FOX special. He's undefeated in the UFC (8-0). Dos Santos has beaten Roy Nelson, Stefan Struve, and the aforementioned Velasquez, who are on this PPV card. Mir is a two-time UFC heavyweight champion and has been with the UFC since 2001. Mir has won three straight, but looked unimpressive against aged opponents Mirko Cro Cop and Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira. He did however, have a sick kimura into an arm break finish against Nogueira that will be in highlight reels for life.Quite frankly, Mir needs this fight to go to the ground--or has to die trying.
Round One:
Mir comes out to old reliable "Bleeding Out" by Linkin Park. JDS out to "Eye of The Tiger." According to Wrestling Observer Bryan Alvarez's Twitter feed, Brock Lesnar is in attendance, presumably with Paul Heyman. Kind of odd, considering he hates people, but brilliant to keep people talking about him--even if his current booking in WWE is questionable at best. OK, enough pro wrestling. Let's get this fight underway! And speak of the devil, they show Lesnar in the crowd!
OK, here's the fight. I promise. Herb Dean is our ref. Canvas still stained by BigFoot's blood. Mir immediately goes for the single leg takedown. He drops low. Pulls guard. Couldn't get him. Jab by Dos Santos. Leg kick by Mir. Combo and high kick misses by Mir. JDS looks like a time bomb. USA chant. Left hook by dos Santos. High leg kick by Mir. Another. jab by dos Santos. Leg kick by Mir. Combo by dos Santos finds its mark. He eats the right. Bad idea, Mir.
Another shot by dos Santos. Leg kick by Mir. Hook by dos Santos. Straight lefts by Mir Go for the takedown again, buddy. This doesn't bode well. Big body shot by dos Santos. Uppercut grazes Mir. Dos santos changing levels. Dos Santos hasn't lost since 2007. Stiff jab again by dos Santos.. Another shot by dos Santos staggers Mir. Beastly combo by dos Santos nearly finishes Mir, who''s wobbled by saved by the bell. Mir is bloodied though. He went for a leg lock before the bell, but dos Santos wisely got out of the way.
10-8 dos Santos because of the near finish
Round Two:
Mir's corner asked him where he is. He got everything right expect venue. It happens. Another connection by dos Santos. Combo by Mir that was slow as hell.JDS knocks the hurt Mir down again. He lets him up, not wanting to play BJJ game. It looks like Mir got poked in the eye, but ref doesn't pause fight. He's getting owned in stand up. Get it to the ground for dear life, Frank. Mir's face is a mess. Leg kicks by Mir. Big right hand sends Mir down. Dos Santos runs in and destroys Mir. Herb Dean stops this destruction. Not even close.
Official Decision: Junior dos Santos (15-1) def. Frank Mir (16-6) at 3:04 of Round Two.
JDS says he's FEELING AWESOME! NOT BAD FOR A NICE GUY, he says. He says he doesn't care about Big Nog's fight with Mir. He came to defend his belt and he did it. He says his hand his hurt and Frank can take a punch. He acknowledges his Brazilian fans in Portugese. The nine-year-old fan Breno is shown in the crowd, who JDS brought from Brazil. He says he loves the kids and is glad he can be their hero. JDS raises him up in the air. Classy moment and class act. The UFC and JDS make a kid's dream come true.
