UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
Commentators: Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg
July 7, 2012
Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (32-4) vs. Chael Sonnen (27-12-1)
Round One:
The epic rematch is here. Yes, Silva hugged Steven Seagal before entering the cage. Yves Lavigne is our referee. The crowd chants USA. But Sonnen gets booed. Silva also gets a mixed reaction.
They don't touch gloves. Silva was wiping his face for a bit, but the ref wipes him down. Loud Silva chants now. Silva comes out swinging, but Sonnen immediately gets the takedown. Full guard. Now USA chants. Silva doing a good good tying up Sonnen. Sonnen trying to work the ground and pound, trying to put Silva against the cage. Sonnen trying to pass to side control. Half guard by Sonnen. Sonnen trying to pass, hitting the side of Silva's head. Silva controlling the posture. Elbow to the head of Silva. Loud USA chant. Sonnen slapping Silva's ears. Sonnen. Big punch by sonnen frm top. Sonnen stuck in half guard.
He's gotta be careful of Silva's submissions. Hard shots by Sonnen. Lavigne telling the fighters to work. LET'S GO SONNEN and boos drowning the arena sound now. Sonnen trying to go to side control, but still stuck in half guard. He elbows Silva on the head. Sonnen nearly has full mount and is driving his chest on Silva. Sonnen should throw some more strikes.
10-8 Sonnen due to Silva not doing much, but Sonnen didn't exactly do the most damage either given his dominant positions--or did he?
Round Two:
Sonnen pushes forward and presses Silva against the cage. Silva has a hold of Sonnen's leg. Briefly. Knees to the thighs by silva. Knees by Sonnen. Sonnen drops down, but is stuffed so far. They tie up and break. Silva trying to get his strikes in. Sonnen giving him no space. Sonnen rushes at him. Silva avoids getting taken down. Sonnen gets knocked down.
Silva goes on the attack. Rogan mentions an illegal knee. I didn't see it and neither did ref. The replay shows Sonnen attempted a spinning F'N backfist of all things, slipped, and took a knee to the body on the ground. So it was clean, as was this victory. Sonnen looks devastated.
Official Decision: Anderson Silva (32-4) def. Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) via TKO (punches) at 1:55 of Round Two to retain the UFC middleweight championship.
Silva embraces his emotional sons, coaches. Rogan asks Silva if this is his most satisying victory. Silva says Sonnen is nothing. This is a sport. This is the UFC. It's a real sport, despite Sonnen's disprespectful comments towards Brazil. Silva shouts out Brazil. Oh by the way, it's Silv'as 16th consecutive win. Silva awkwardly pulls Sonnen into the center and puts his arm around him. Sonnen looks like "WTF." Silva says everyone should applaud Sonnen and even invited him for a barbeque at his house. Wow.
Sonnen says no one owes him anything and that Silva is a true champion. He says he has to look at the tape. Say what you want about Anderson Silva's personality, but he showed true class at UFC 148.
But was that an illegal knee? An "I" for an "I" (Sonnen being gassed up in their last fight)? Let us know.
Is Anderson Silva the greatest fighter of all-time?
