Round One:

This is Shields' return to middleweight. Considering he hasn't trained in altitude and admitted he didn't take Herman seriously until lately, this could be a bad night for ol' Jake. We'll see. Herman fights out of Colorado, so he'll have the advantage as far as being used to the air.

Body kick by Shields. Combo by Herman. Herman attempts the takedown, but Shields sprawls and nearly ends up on top. Why grapple with one of the best grapplers in MMA? Herman presses him up against the cage. Shields tries for a guillotine but can't get it. Actually, I think I get why Herman wanted to grapple. He wants to test his cardio. Too bad Shields is able to get Herman down. Herman gets up, but Shields has the hooks in. He is able to shake Shields off and presses him against the cage as they're back on their feet. As Goldberg said, Herman dodged a bullet.

Both fighters still locked up. Short forearm shot by Herman as Shields is up against the cage. Shields attempts the guillotine, but can't get it. He goes for the takedown, but Herman stays on his feet. This is definitely a clinch battle in Round One. The stats show Herman has controlled most of this fight. Crowd is booing. I'm sure Dana White is having flashbacks of Kongo-Jordan from a couple weeks ago, but so far I don't find this fight that bad.

Tough round to score. I'd give it to Herman, but judges may give it to Shields for the takedown.

10-10

Round Two:

Body kick by Shields. Herman presses Shields against the cage again. Why, Ed, why?! Shields quickly takes Herman down. Half guard. Now transitioning into side control. Kimura by Shield. Now I can ask again: Why in the hell did Herman try grapple? Herman dodges another bullet and escapes the kimura. Shields trying to work some ground and pound. Both fighters are up against the corner of the cage. Shields pulling Herman away from the cage. Crowd booing. Herman rolls out and tried an upkick, but Shields ends up on top. Full guard. Short elbows by Herman. Half guard. Shields gaining upper hand with ground and pound. OK, Ed. Here's an idea. The grappling game plan failed. Try to take your opponent's head off in the third. OK?
