UFC on FOX 4: Shogun vs. Vera
Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
August 4, 2012
Commentators: Mike Golderg and Joe Rogan
Light heavyweight bout: Phil Davis (9-1) vs. Wagner Prado (8-0)
This is Davis' first fight since his only loss suffered against Rashad Evans in January at UFC on FOX 2. Davis is the former All American and national champion wrestler out of Penn State. Before his loss to Evans, he went 9-0 in the UFC, defeating the likes of Brian Stann, Tim Boetsch, and Alexander Gustafsson. Prado replaces the injured Chad Griggs. I'm surprised to see Davis not in the headliner spot of this prelim card, but I guess Phan-Miller is more likely to be exciting and a better lead in to the FOX main card. Better question: Why isn't Davis on the main card?
Prado has an awesome story. He was on Brazil's version of "Pimp My Ride," mentioned he wanted to be an MMA fighter, the network hooked him up with a training session with Anderson Silva and Team Black House. Now a couple years later, the dude is undefeated an in the UFC.
Round One:
Davis got the closest thing to a star reaction thus far. High kick by Davis grazes Prado. Prado rushes at Davis and hits him, but gets poked in the eye. Holy crap. Blood is coming out of Prado's eye. The doctor tells the ref "It's over." Ref waves it off. Prado is very emotional and screams loudly. He's trying to tell the ref he's fine. Davis feels terrible about the accidental poke and gives Prado a hug. Poor guy. No one's a winner in this fight. On second thought--good thing it wasn't on the main card.
Official Decision: No decision. If Prado heals up soon, book this fight on PPV ASAP.
FUEL TV analysts Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen said Davis should be glad the fight ended because it wasn't going his way and he didn't use his wrestling early. Ouch. The fight was only two minutes! But I get what they're saying...
