UFC on FOX 4: Shogun vs. Vera
Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
August 4, 2012
Commentators: Mike Golderg and Joe Rogan
Preliminary Card on FUEL TV (5pm/ET)
Flyweight bout: Ulysses Gomez (9-2) vs. John Moraga (10-1)
Gomez replaces Ian McCall.
Ulysses' nickname is "Useless." Don't ask me why. He also comes out to Justin Bieber's hit single "Baby." Whatever works.
Round One:
Herb Dean is our referee. Moraga is a two-time All American wrestler out of Arizona State. He seems confident on his feet his highly-touted flyweight opponent. They briefly clinch. Break. Moraga hits some right leg kicks on Gomez, followed by a body shot. Both are bleeding. Body kick by Moraga.
Rogan points out it was an accidental headbutt that caused Gomez's forehead cut. Gomez attempts the takedown, but is stuffed. Rogan keeps calling Gomez "Useless." Funny. Knee to the body of Gomez. Big elbow. Uppercuts at a rapid pace. Gomez is down and OUT COLD. Good lord that happened so fast. Back-to-back elbows. Uppercuts. Moraga impresses in his UFC debut.
Official Decision: John Moraga (11-1) def. Ulysses Gomez (9-3) via knockout at 3:46 of Round One.
Moraga tells Rogan he's proud of his performance and is here to make the UFC happy. The Arizonan says he hopes he set the tone for the night. I sure hope so too.
Featherweight bout: Manny Gamburyan (11-7) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (13-11-1)
Round One:
Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is in Gamburyan's corner. UFC president Dana White wore a shirt that displayed her nude ESPN Magazine cover. Seriously. Our referee is Luis Cobian. Flying knee by Gamburyan hits Omigawa at around the one minute mark. Big left hook by Omigawa, who is crazy strong. Gamburyan recovers and fires back with some shots of his own. Omigawa avoids Gamburyan's takedown attempt.
10-9 Omigawa
Round Two:
Gamburyan swinging and kicking with bad intentions, but Omigawa isn't backing down. Gamburyan works for the takedown and eventually gets it. Showing his judo background with a slam on Omigawa, who gets back to his feet. Gamburyan drags Omigawa down and takes his back. Omigawa showcases good defense and is able to get back to his feet. It looks like Gamburyan may have been poked in the eye. He has some mild swelling there. Head kick by Gamburyan.
10-9 Gamburyan
