UFC President Dana White confirmed on Saturday night in an interview with MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani that Junior dos Santos will defend his heavyweight championship against Cain Velasquez on December 29.
This comes off the heels of suspended heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem's appearance last week on Spike's MMA Uncensored Live, when he claimed that he would be meeting with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to potentially get licensed earlier than the set date of December 27. White told the media last week that dos Santos was angling to fight Overeem due to his constant trash talk. Privately, as Dave Meltzer mentioned on his official site's MMA message board, dos Santos' camp wanted the Overeem fight because they believe it's a bigger money matchup.
White, along with the NSAC's Keith Kizer, publicly shot that possibility down and it looks like "The Reem" will have to take another fight or await the winner of the JDS-Velasquez rematch.
Considering Overeem is only unlicensed for nine months and not technically suspended a full year, he has already gotten off easy in many people's eyes, despite his failed drug test and questionable explanations as to why.
