WWE Royal Rumble 2018 took place Sunday, January 28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA and aired live on WWE Network.

WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Highlights + Results:

Royal Rumble Kickoff Results:

205 Live Six Man Tag: Kalisto, Lince Dorado, and Gran Metalik def. TJP (TJ Perkins), Gentleman Jack Gallagher, and Drew Gulak. Fun match and great showcase of Metalik’s talent, who did his best to get crowd into it at the end.

The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) def. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Solid Raw quality TV match.

Bobby Roode U.S. Title Open Challenge – Bobby Roode (c) def. Mojo Rawley to retain the title.

Throughout the Kickoff, we had Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair, Alundra Blayze. and “Nature Boy” Ric Flair give their Royal Rumble thoughts. Blayze was terrible as she couldn’t make a pick or seem to remember who was in the match. JBL flipped his lid. Terrible segment.

WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Results (PPV):

WWE Championship 2-on-1 Handicap Match: AJ Styles (c) def. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to retain the WWE Title. Weird to see the WWE Championship opening the show, but crowd is hot for Styles and Zayn.

Owens and Zayn make constant tags much to the annoyance of Styles and the fans. Eventually, Styles unloads on both with strikes. Owens and Zayn hit everything from superkicks to the Blue Thunder Bomb, all with Styles kicking out. Styles hit the Phenomenal Forearm on Zayn, but the pin is broken up by Owens. Styles later locks in the Calf Crusher on Owens, but KO hangs on long enough for Zayn to make the save. Finish comes as follows: Styles lifts Zayn who may or may not just barely tag Owens in. Styles dumps Zayn on the outside and reverses Owens’ popup powerbomb attempt for the winning pinfall. All three did the best they could given the awkwardness of a handicap match, but it was Styles that shined as the strong, credible WWE Champion.

Backstage, Owens and Zayn scream at SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon about poor refereeing costing them the title again. McMahon simply responds “Yep” and walks away.

WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship Best of Three Falls Match: The Usos (c) def. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin in two straight falls to retain the SmackDown Tag Team Titles. Disappointing match given who was involved. Usos won with a splash, followed by a quick cradle pin. I’m all for a clean sweep when done right, but there’s plenty of time left on the PPV up to this point and all four guys are as talented as they come. Oh well. Instead we got a SmackDown tag team match.

Shinsuke Nakamura wins the Men’s Royal Rumble Match. Looks like women’s Royal Rumble match is main eventing. Wow. Weird to have a Rumble match at 8pm.

First entrant is Rusev with a huge RUSEV DAY ovation. Second entrant is Finn Balor. Third entrant is Rhyno. Not much going on yet other besides Rusev running wild. Fourth entrant is Baron Corbin. Corbin doesn’t was any time running wild. Cleverly runs under the ropes and clotheslines Rusev. We’ll see if Corbin can have another good Rumble showing. Corbin counters Rhyno’s Gore with the Deep Six.

Baron Corbin eliminates Rhyno.

Finn Balor eliminates Baron Corbin.

Corbin flips his lid and takes out Balor and Rusev on the outside, who has to be escorted by security. Fifth entrant is Heath Slater who is immediately laid out on the ramp by Corbin. Well I can’t say Corbin isn’t a great bully.

Sixth entrant is Elias Samson. Elias takes out Slater on the ramp. Poor Slater. Elias plays the guitar on the way to the ring as everyone is still down on the outside. Elias asks Philly who wants to walk with Elias? Apparently, everyone. Elias says time is an illusion and the only thing that’s real is him. Crowd gears up for an epic Elias performance. Believe it or not, Elias actually plays the guitar sort of in tune hear and disses Rocky and Philly. The clock interrupts Elias. Seventh entrant is WWE NXT Champion Andrade Cien Almas! I may have predicted this. No seriously, watch our Rumble preview or just take my word for it. OK, not more bragging…

Almas hits his trademark running knees on Elias. Elias takes Almas down leading to… Eighth entrant is Bray Wyatt. Wyatt beats up Slater outside, who is still not officially in the match and attacks Elias and almas. Clotheslines Balor. Ninth entrant is Big E of The New Day. Big E tries to get Slater in the ring and feeds him pancakes from his tights. Rusev kicks Big E and is trying to eliminate Almas. Bear with us as there’s a lot going on here! Rusev Day chants continue.

10th entrant is Tye Dillinger, but the Perfect 10 is no where to be found. We cut backstage to Owens and Zayn taking out Dillinger. Zayn takes Dillinger’s place because somehow, that’s legal. Zayn runs in. 11th entrant is The Bar’s Sheamus, the 2012 Royal Rumble winner.

Heath Slater finally gets in the ring and immediately eliminates Sheamus on his birthday! The superstars in the ring are in disbelief.

Bray Wyatt eliminates Heath Slater.

12th entrant is Xavier Woods. New Day tries to eliminate Elias, but is broken up by Rusev. Still plenty of wrestlers in the ring including NXT Champion Almas. 13th entrant is Titus Worldwide’s Apollo Crews who is greeted by shrugs. Wyatt attempts a Sister Abigail on Balor, but is countered. Balor hits a foot stomp on Wyatt. 14th entrant is Shinsuke Nakamura.

Crowd is singing Nakamura’s theme song for a good minute straight after the music stops. Nakamura takes out Crews and avoids Zayn’s Helluva Kick.

Shinsuke Nakamura eliminates Sami Zayn. So much for the Kevin and Sami Show.

15th entrant is Cesaro. Cesaro tries to throw Balor out, but Almas stops that for the time being. Looks like they’re setting up Roman Reigns to run wild and eliminate a bunch of bodies in the ring. 16th entrant is Kofi Kingston.

Cesaro eliminates Apollo Crews with an uppercut on the apron after a fun exchange.

17th entrant is Jinder Mahal. Jerry Lawler says he did research (lol) and picks Mahal to win the Rumble.

Jinder Mahal eliminates Xavier Woods. Mahal and Big E are on the apron. Mahal kicks Big E!

Jinder Mahal eliminates Big E.

18th entrant is Seth Rollins. Slingblade on Elias and Wyatt. Slingblade on Balor. Cesaro knocks down Balor and tries to eliminate him.

Seth Rollins monkey flips Cesaro to eliminate him.

Mahal thinks he’s eliminated Kingston, but Kingston’s feet land on Woods and a plate of pancakes! Kingston trying to hop back into the ring, but Mahal blocks him. New Day propels Kingston back into the ring!

Kofi Kingston eliminates Jinder Mahal!

Andrade Cien Almas eliminates Kofi Kingston!

19th entrant is Woken Matt Hardy. Huge DELETE chants.

Bray Wyatt and Matt Hardy double team to eliminate Rusev. Such BS.

Wyatt and Hardy then eliminate each other.

20th entrant is John Cena! Everyone left in the ring attacks Cena for a moment.

John Cena recovers and AAs Elias out of the ring.

21st entrant is Shane “The Hurricane” Helms! Unfortunately, Hurricane attempts an ill fated chokeslam and gets AA’ed by Cena.

John Cena eliminates Hurricane Helms.

22nd entrant is Aiden English. Still pissed Rusev is out, although he did last 30 minutes in the Rumble. Balor is still in since entering number two. 23rd entrant is ADAM COLE BAY BAY. Wow. This is a surprise.

Finn Balor eliminates Aiden English.

Cole is duking is out with Almas. Cole’s ribs are taped up from last night’s Extreme Rules match with Aleister Black at NXT TakeOver. 24th entrant is 2009 and 2017 Royal Rumble winner Randy Orton. Almas launches himself at Orton and gets RKO’ed.

Randy Orton eliminates Almas. Not a fan of that elimination at all. 25th entrant is Titus O’Neil. Orton’s rapid hair growth looks odder by the day. 26th entrant is WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz accompanied by Miztourage. Miz counters Cena’s AA and DDTs Cena. Miz ties Goldust and Undertaker with third all-time in Royal Rumble appearances according to Michael Cole. Miz gives the YES kicks to Rollins and Cena. Rollins throws out Miz who lands on the apron.

27th entrant is 2006 Royal Rumble winner Rey Mysterio!

Rey Mysterio eliminates Adam Cole.

Mysterio runs wild and hits the 619 on Miz. Mysterio looks in incredible shape for a man over 40!

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins eliminate The Miz.

Roman Reigns immediately eliminates Seth Rollins.

29th entrant is Goldust. This is the 12th Royal Rumble appearance for Goldust, second all-time tied with Shawn Michaels and Big Show behind Kane.

30th entrant is Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler counters Cena’s AA and hits superkick. Superkick on Orton. Talk about underwhelming final entrants. Ziggler superkicks Goldust off the apron.

Dolph Ziggler eliminates Goldust.

Ziggler hits the Zig Zag on Nakamura. Ziggler tunes up the band ala HBK. Nakamura suplexes Ziggler onto the apron, but lands on his feet. Balor knocks Ziggler off. So much for that comeback.

Finn Balor eliminates Dolph Ziggler

We have six men left. Two sides – 2000s generation and current generation. AA from Cena on Balor. 619 by Mysterio on Reigns. RKO on Nakamura! RKO attempt by Cena blocked. Reigns throws Orton out.

Roman Reigns eliminates Randy Orton

Double 619 on Reigns and Cena! Mysterio goes for another, but Balor throws Mysterio out of the ring!

Finn Balor eliminates Rey Mysterio.

Final four are Balor, Nakamura, Cena, and Reigns. Crowd is behind Nakamura. Reigns attacks Balor. Cena attacks Nakamura. Cena and Reigns stare each other down and get YOU BOTH SUCK chants. Balor and Nakamura mount a comeback. Now it’s Balor and Nakamura staring each other down much to the delight of the Crowd. Crowd chanting “TOO SWEET.” Balor sent on the apron by Nakamura. Balor gets back in the ring. Head kick by Nakamura on Balor. Great back and forth action between Nakamura and Balor.

Cena and Reigns dual clothesline the two former NXT Champions. Crowd chants YOU BOTH SUCK again. Cena and Reigns trade punches with each getting boos. Reigns hits a Samoan Drop on Cena. Reigns is left standing tall pondering what he’s gonna do. Reigns goes for a Superman punch, but Cena counters with a protoplex and Five Knuckle Shuffle attempt. Slingblade on Cena by Balor. Slingblade on Reigns and Nakamura.

Head kick by Nakamura on Balor. Nakamura goes for the Kinshasha running knee, but Balor counters with a foot stomp.

John Cena eliminates Finn Balor.

Crowd chants bullshit. Can’t disagree there, but let’s see who wins. Cena and Reigns double team Nakamura. Cena attempts the Five Knuckle Shuffle again and connects to Reigns. Cena attempts an AA, but Reigns slips out and hits a Superman Punch. Reigns nudges Nakamura out of the way, but seems to be wasting too much time for the spear. And just like that, Cena hits the AA. Nakamura tries to choke out Cena. Cena counters with a suplex attempt. Nakamura counters and puts Cena on the apron.

Shinsuke Nakamura hits a running knee to eliminate Cena.

Nakamura and Reigns are the final two! Nakamura tells Reigns to COME ON. They trade BOO and YAY punches. Big Superman punch by Reigns on Nakamura. Reigns tries to throw Nakamura, but Nakamura hangs on. Head kick by Nakamura. Nakamura locks is a triangle choke on Reigns over the top rope. Reigns counters, but has to powerbomb Reigns back in the ring. Reigns sets up for the spear, but Nakamura catches him with a knee and another knee! Nakamura goes for the Kinshasa, but Reigns answers with a spear. Reigns favoring his wrist.

Shinsuke Nakamura wins the 2018 Royal Rumble match after eliminating Roman Reigns!

After the match, Renee Young interviews Nakamura in the ring and asks him if he’s decided which champion he’s facing at WrestleMania 34. Well, that was quick. Crowd chants AJ STYLES. Nakamura takes a long pause and says AJ STYLES! I love that a WrestleMania match is getting a three month build.

Backstage, Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon celebrate SmackDown’s Nakamura winning the men’s Royal Rumble match. Stephanie McMahon and Kurt Angle claim a Monday Night Raw superstar will win the women’s Royal Rumble match tonight. Stephanie says tonight is about making history and hints at a surprise. God forbid it’s Stephanie in the Royal Rumble match.

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship: The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro) def. Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan (c) to win the WWE Raw Tag Team Titles for the fourth time. Rollins worked most of the match as Jordan is banged up in real life and was taken out early in the match by The Bar. Jordan sold concussion-like symptoms and tried to go, but to no avail, leaving Rollins to succumb to The Bar. Good work by all involved, but the crowd and even the announcers sound tired and it’s not even 10pm yet.

WWE Universal Championship Triple Threat Match: Brock Lesnar (c) with Paul Heyman def. Braun Strowman and Kane to retain the WWE Universal Title. Women’s Royal Rumble match is main eventing for sure. Heyman does the intro for Lesnar who seems to be the fan favorite.

Strowman runs wild to start the match including a running knee/drop kick on Lesnar! Strowman and Lesnar trade knees and punches. Kane interrupts Lesnar’s F5 attempt with a chokeslam. Strowman corners Kane as Lesnar regroups outside. Lesnar attacks Kane with a steel chair. Strowman punches the steel chair out of Lesnar’s hand and throws both opponents out of the ring. Strowman sends Lesnar into the barricade and takes out Kane with the steel steps. Strowman pulls out a table puts it in the rin — and another table in the ring!

Strowman sets up a table in the corner and in middle of ring. Kane attempts a chokeslam, but Strowman hits his own. Lesnar breaks up the pin and hits three German suplexes on Strowman. Strowman hits running power slam on Lesnar through the table, but Kane immediately breaks up the pin. So much for the drama of the nearfall. Kane. Kane and Strowman looked to have some miscommunication as Kane sends him into the table in the corner. The crowd goes dead for a bit for whatever reason. Kane chokeslams Lesnar, but Strowman breaks up the pin. Waistlock and big throw by Strowman on Lesnar sending the Universal Champ outside.

Strowman throws Lesnar into another barricade and tears apart the German announcers table. Lesnar counters Strowman and hits an F5 through the table! Lesnar tips over another table on top of Strowman similar to what Strowman did to him at SummerSlam 2017. Lesnar F5s Kane onto another table that eventually implodes. Strowman rises back to life and knocks Lesnar down. The back of Lesnar’s head lands on the steel steps. Back in the ring, Strowman hits the running power slam on Lesnar, but doesn’t go for the cover. Strowman hits another, but Kane attacks Strowman with a steel chair, sending him outside.

Again, shockingly no where near as much crowd heat as one would expect. Kane setting up Lesnar for the Tombstone. Lesnar escapes and sends Kane into Strowman on the apron. F5 on Kane on a steel chair. Lesnar gets the pin and retains. Great effort with an anticlimactic finish and shockingly little heat.

Asuka wins the First-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match.

Stephanie McMahon is on commentary and teased a surprise earlier in the night.. Hopefully, it’s Ronda Rousey and not herself. Although you could do Stephanie in at 29 and Rousey at 30. Maria Menounos is our special ring announcer. Cole is telling us Stephanie is a trailblazer and would never tell us that herself. Slightly inaccurate. WWE Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair come out to watch at ringside.

The first entrant is Sasha Banks. The second entrant is the first SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch. McMahon tells Cole, Booker T, and Corey Graves she’s overwhelmed by the moment. Banks and Lynch debut cool new gear for the occasion. Good back and forth action by the two formal rivals. Banks and Lynch go for their respective submissions early on, but are countered. Double clothesline.

Third entrant is Riott Squad’s Sarah Logan. Logan dropkicks Banks. Clotheslines Lynch. Cole says Logan was part of the men’s wrestling team in high school. McMahon uses another sentence with the word “history” for the 10th time. Headbutt to Banks by Logan. Logan thrown to the apron by Lynch, but avoids elimination. Fourth entrant is Absolution’s Mandy Rose. It looks like McMahon’s role on commentary is to provide background info on commentary.

Fifth entrant is WWE Hall of Famer Lita! Huge pop for Lita. Lita double clotheslines Banks and Lynch. Rose and Lita trade strikes. Banks sends Logan to the apron, but she survives. Lita puts Rose on the apron, but Rose counters with a knee. Lita shoulder strikes Rose off the apron.

Ninth entrant is Torrie Wilson. Facebuster by Wilson on Brooke. Logan clotheslines Wilson. Brooke goes after Wilson and ends up on apron.

Torrie Wilson eliminates Dana Brooke

So Brooke eliminates the Mae Young Classic winner only to be eliminated by TORRIE WILSON? 10th entrant is Absolution’s Sonya Deville.  I’m disappointed Paige isn’t at least at ringside to support her team. Deville has her hair up and is squaring up.

Sonya Deville eliminates Torries Wilson

McMahon says Lynch’s singlet gear represents the future. OK then. 11th entrant is Riott Squad’s Liv Morgan. Morgan sends Banks face first on the mat and hits a double foot stomp to her back. Riott Squad tries to eliminate Banks, but Lynch makes the save.

16th entrant is Vickie Guerrero! Guerrero screams EXCUSE ME one too many times and says everyone in the ring must listen to her. They all grab Guerrero and throw her out of the ring! Great surprise.

Nia Jax eliminates Kelly Kelly and Jacqueline.

Nia Jax eliminates Ruby Riottt

Naomi goes for her trademark kicks, but is thrown out by Jax. Naomi gets her Kofi Kingston spot as she lands on the women outside and hangs on the barricade. 23rd entrant is WWE NXT Champion Ember Moon. Naomi is technically not eliminated and uses Maria’s chair and her hands to get back in the ring. Crossbody by Naomi on Jax, but is caught…

Nia Jax eliminates Naomi

24th entrant is Beth Phoenix! Crowd chants THIS IS AWESOME. You damn right. Phoenix battles with Jax and tries to lift her — unsuccessfully. On the second attempt, Phoenix gets Jax up, but couldn’t eliminate her. Natalya and Phoenix briefly reunite as the Divas of Doom to send Jax through the middle rope. Jax not eliminated. Natalya hugs Phoenix and eliminates her best friend. Carmella stomps Natalya down.

25th entrant is Asuka. Asuka cleans house until Ember Moon stares her down. Moon is still selling her injured arm at the hands of Shayna Baszler. Moon hits her Eclipse on Asuka, but can’t capitalize. Asuka sends Moon to the outside.

Asuka eliminates Ember Moon.

26th entrant is Mickie James. James dives onto Asuka and takes out Banks. Natalya goes after James in the corner. James fires back and hits a neckbreaker. 27th entrant is Nikki Bella. Bella looks good early on, but is attacked by Carmella, who mocks her fiancee John Cena. Bella recovers and eliminates Carmella.

Nikki Bella eliminates Carmella

Asuka knocks down Bella. 28th entrant is Brie Bella! Brie hits her trademark running knee on all the superstars and stars working with her sister. Bella Twins dropkick Jax off the apron, but Jax has never gone over the top rope.

29th entrant is Bayley. We’ll know in a couple minutes if it’s Ronda Rousey or not. Bayley and Asuka brawl as we find out the final entrant…

No. 30 is Trish Stratus! No Rousey and I’m perfectly fine with this. Stratus hits dual bulldogs and a hurricarana on Bayley. Stratus and her old rival James face off to a big pop. James goes up top and blocks Stratus’ hurricarana attempt. Stratus head kicks James who falls outside.

Trish Stratus eliminates Mickie James

All the superstars left attack Jax who unleashes hell. After several attempts, they are able to toss Jax out.

Bella Twins eliminate Sasha Banks.

Bella Twins try to get rid of Asuka, but she goes nuts with her own set of YES kicks. Asuka throws Brie out who hangs on the apron. Nikki hits the TKO on Asuka and then knocks Brie Bella off the apron!

Nikki Bella eliminates her own sister Brie Bella

We’re left with Asuka and Nikki Bella as our final two. Nikki throws Asuka to the apron. Asuka locks on a submission to tip Nikki over the top rope. Both are the apron. Asuka takes out Nikki’s leg with a kick and wins the first ever women’s Royal Rumble!

Right after the match, both Women’s Champions are in the ring to confront Asuka. Ronda Rousey comes out to confront all three in the ring! Rousey tries to shake hands with Asuka who rejects the gesture. Rousey stares all three down and points at the WrestleMania sign. Rousey stares at Stephanie McMahon. Michael Cole says the news is breaking on SOCIAL MEDIA as Royal Rumble goes off the air.

Overall, a great show with some epic moments, but man, is it silly to tell people who invested six hours of their time on this PPV to go to SOCIAL MEDIA for an update on Rousey.

I just checked social media and it’s official via ESPN and Ronda Rousey’s publicist: Rousey signs a full-time deal with WWE.
