WWE SmackDown Live 9/5/17 Rapid Recap: Randy Orton vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

We have not one, but two big matchups to set the scene for an eventful SmackDown Live next week. As for this week, we have a dream match main event. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Randy Orton!

WWE SmackDown Live 9/5/17 Results

Shane McMahon was suspended indefinitely as the SmackDown Live Commissioner after attacking Kevin Owens at the opening of the show. Owens blamed McMahon for all his bad luck lately and said his family would’ve been better off if McMahon died in that helicopter crash. Oof.

WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya def. Carmella w/ James Ellsworth. Ellsworth accidentally dropped the MITB briefcase in the ring, distracting Carmella who was rolled up by the champ. Next week: Natalya vs. Naomi for the title at Sin City SmackDown in Las Vegas, NV.

After the match, Carmella broke up her friendship with Ellsworth… or so we thought. Later in the show, Ellsworth apologized to Carmella in the most pathetic manner possible. Carmella accepted his apology, but said from now on, they’ll do things HER way. She then kisses Ellsworth and slaps him! If there was ever a time to want to be James Ellsworth…

Dolph Ziggler re-debuted on SmackDown, mocking John Cena, Naomi, and Macho Man. The verbiage was a bit cringe, but Ziggler did a good job getting boos. Whether that translates to fans caring about his matches again remains to be seen.

Aiden English def. Sami Zayn with a quick pin. This is the thanks Zayn gets for raising almost $70,000 for a mobile clinic in Syria. Go figure…

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Randy Orton to earn a WWE Championship match with Jinder Mahal at Hell in a Cell next month. The winner was to originally face Mahal next week, but a month buildup to HIAC is fine by me. Very good TV main event, but given who was involved, this could’ve and should’ve been a PPV main event with 20 uninterrupted minutes of in-ring time. With all due respect to Mahal’s improvement over the last few months — it will be a waste of two huge wins for Nakamura (Cena and Orton) if he loses again to the champ at HIAC.

At the end of the show, Daniel Bryan confronted KO, who threatened to sue WWE earlier in the night. KO didn’t back down on his threat. Bryan responded by saying that he’ll be confronted in the ring next week — by Vince McMahon!

Confirmed for Sin City SmackDown Live 9/12/17 next week:

  • AJ Styles vs. Tye Dillinger for the U.S. Title
  • Usos vs. New Day in a street fight for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles
  • Natalya vs. Naomi for the Women’s Title
  • Mr. McMahon confronts Kevin Owens

Overall, a good and eventful edition of SmackDown Live that sets up a stacked and likely newsworthy show next week!
